Marathon is still in development at Bungie, despite difficulties the legendary creators of Destiny and Halo have faced over the past 12 months. After significant layoffs at the studio, there’s been rumors that Marathon was in trouble but all signs point to development of this new extraction shooter ongoing.  Admittedly, it’s been a while since we’ve received a round of official Marathon news. The game was unveiled in 2023, following Bungie’s acquisition into PlayStation Studios, and precious little has been shown since. Still it remains one of the most anticipated upcoming PS5 games, particularly after the success of the most recent Destiny expansion – our The Final Shape review was very positive. I’m continuing to look out for new info, but while we all wait let’s get you caught up on everything we know about Marathon so far. What is Marathon?  If you aren’t familiar with the franchise, the Marathon trilogy is what Bungie earned its reputation on before it became synonymous with Halo and Destiny. These early first-person shooters released for Mac OS between 1994 and 1996, and after a 27-year break Bungie is returning to the universe it created – in fact…

Black Myth: Wukong reportedly cost developer Game Science around $43 million to make, but it more than made that money back in just weeks, boasting over 20 million sales at $60 a pop.According to a new report from the Zhejiang State Taxation Administration in China, the smash-hit action RPG had an overall estimated budget of “more than 300 million Yuan,” per machine translation. That amounts to about $42.3 million USD by current conversions, which is quite a bit lower than the $70 million budget previously reported by Bloomberg. Importantly, the scope of these figures isn’t totally clear. This tax admin specifies total development cost, while Bloomberg reported on the contribution from Game Science’s biggest external shareholder and how that compared to the game’s budget. Staff salaries, office space, necessary hardware and software, support staff, marketing, distribution, and plenty of other factors and resources can affect a game’s budget, to say nothing of eventual revenue splits with investors and partners. We simply do not have the specifics there. The exact cost to make Wukong will likely remain unclear unless the developer itself shares it, but this figure still he…

As Dead Cells creator Motion Twin gears up for the first public demo of its new co-op action roguelike, Windblown, soon to be followed by its Steam early access launch on October 24, GamesRadar+ spoke with two members of the small team about their vision for the game. Windblown follows seven years of stellar updates and expansions for the studio’s breakout hit, long shepherded by co-dev Evil Empire after it was founded and expanded by former Motion Twin staff as the mothership pressed on with other projects while maintaining creative oversight. Will Windblown follow in its update-heavy footsteps? I asked Thomas Vasseur and Yannick Berthier of the worker-owned studio of eight (for comparison, Evil Empire boasts of 70 employees and three projects on its website) if they want Windblown to have a long tail of support like Dead Cells. Berthier replied first: “If we can, why not? If we are lucky enough.”Vasseur was keener still. “I really wish it will be longer,” he said. “Because it’s multiplayer, it’s co-op, and we have a ton of things to do and a ton of things to say in this game, I think. And yes, I really hope this will be longer than Dead Cells. That would be great.”In a follo…

Gem locations

Valve formally revealed Deadlock over the last weekend, and its closed beta hit a new peak of concurrent players not long after. The surprise MOBA shooter has 89,203 players at time of writing. It's just over double the original peak of 44,512 players in August 16.Deadlock's existence has been known for some time, but Valve was insistent on keeping it secret up to this point. That move drew controversy after The Verge wrote about its time with the beta, and banned writer Sean Hollister after bypassing the prompt to not speak on the beta and talking about it.For those curious, the current Deadlock peak is just above the 24-hour peak for Valve's older multiplayer titles like Team Fortess 2 (71,863 players) and Left 4 Dead 2 (27,904 players), plus the all-time peak for the first Left 4 Dead (30,616 players).Notably, it's also the first wholly new project from Valve in some time, and its newest title after last year's Counter-Strike 2 and Half-Life Alyx in 2020.At time of writing, Deadlock is limited to playtesters and whoever they invite. It's unclear when Valve will release a wider, more open beta, or what other platforms the eventual, no-longer-secretive…
