Marathon is still in development at Bungie, despite difficulties the legendary creators of Destiny and Halo have faced over the past 12 months. After significant layoffs at the studio, there’s been rumors that Marathon was in trouble but all signs point to development of this new extraction shooter ongoing. Admittedly, it’s been a while since we’ve received a round of official Marathon news. The game was unveiled in 2023, following Bungie’s acquisition into PlayStation Studios, and precious little has been shown since. Still it remains one of the most anticipated upcoming PS5 games, particularly after the success of the most recent Destiny expansion – our The Final Shape review was very positive. I’m continuing to look out for new info, but while we all wait let’s get you caught up on everything we know about Marathon so far. What is Marathon? If you aren’t familiar with the franchise, the Marathon trilogy is what Bungie earned its reputation on before it became synonymous with Halo and Destiny. These early first-person shooters released for Mac OS between 1994 and 1996, and after a 27-year break Bungie is returning to the universe it created – in fact, this is the first completely new project from Bungie in over a decade! This new Marathon game is set to be a PvP-focused extraction shooter, where you’ll need to compete with other players for riches, renown, and survival in an ever-evolving world. Marathon release date speculation Bungie is yet to set a Marathon release date. In fact, it sounds as if the game is still fairly early in development. Marathon’s general manager Scott Taylor says, “there’s still a lot of work to do before launch or even before we’re ready to talk about the game in more detail,” before adding that it’s still too early to give a timeline on when more information will be coming. When Bungie does pull back the curtain in the future, it’ll “be able to show you the gameplay and be much closer to launch.” Has Marathon been delayed? As Marathon was never assigned an official release date, it hasn’t technically been delayed. However production has been stalled by numerous issues at Bungie, following multiple rounds of layoffs at the company over the last 12 months. The first set came in October 2023, where it was reported that Marathon had been pushed to 2025 and that Destiny: The Final Shape was being moved from February to June 2024 – the latter of which turned out to be true. More layoffs have followed since, and it’s unknown what state Marathon is currently in. There have been reports that the shooter’s development is facing ongoing difficulties, although word on the street is that external Marathon playtests are currently underway – so perhaps we’ll see the game surface again soon. Marathon platforms Marathon will be released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. While Sony acquired Bungie in 2022, the studio has committed to being a multi-game, multi-platform studio. As part of this commitment, the studio has confirmed that the new Marathon game will feature full cross-play and cross-save support. Sign up to the GamesRadar+ Newsletter
