Video game hardware spending in the US was down 40 percent in May compared to 2023, numbers company Circana reports.
Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S sales all saw “double-digit percentage declines year-on-year” comparing figures up to May. Switch saw the most significant drop in spending, which Circana’s boss and industry analyst Mat Piscatella said could be “partially attributed to the strength of the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in the May 2023 comparable period”. The game was a smash hit for Nintendo, and launched alongside a themed Switch OLED model.
PlayStation 5 was the top selling console in units and dollar sales in May. The console’s unit sales lead those of PlayStation 4 by eight percent.

Cities: Skylines 2’s publisher thinks that players have developed “higher expectations” of games and are also “less accepting” that they’ll be fixed over time. That’s according to Paradox Interactive deputy chief executive officer Mattias Lilja, who spoke to Rock Paper Shotgun about the delay of Prison Architect 2, as well as the cancellation of Life By You, and reception of Cities: Skylines 2. Talking about the former, Lilja says there were “quality issues” – notably “not the same kind of bucket of challenges that we had with Life By You” – which ultimately led to it being pushed back “to give the players the game they deserve” when it launches.It’s more than that, though, as Lilja continues: “It’s also based on the fact that we, in all transparency, see that fans right now, with a squeezed budget for games, have higher expectations, and are less accepting that you will fix things over time. Black Myth: Wukong reportedly cost developer Game Science around $43 million to make, but it more than made that money back in just weeks, boasting over 20 million sales at $60 a pop.According to a new report from the Zhejiang State Taxation Administration in China, the smash-hit action RPG had an overall estimated budget of “more than 300 million Yuan,” per machine translation. That amounts to about $42.3 million USD by current conversions, which is quite a bit lower than the $70 million budget previously reported by Bloomberg. Importantly, the scope of these figures isn’t totally clear. This tax admin specifies total development cost, while Bloomberg reported on the contribution from Game Science’s biggest external shareholder and how that compared to the game’s budget. Staff salaries, office space, necessary hardware and software, support staff, marketing, distribution, and plenty of other factors and resources can affect a game’s budget, to say nothing of eventual revenue splits with investors and partners. As Dead Cells creator Motion Twin gears up for the first public demo of its new co-op action roguelike, Windblown, soon to be followed by its Steam early access launch on October 24, GamesRadar+ spoke with two members of the small team about their vision for the game. Windblown follows seven years of stellar updates and expansions for the studio’s breakout hit, long shepherded by co-dev Evil Empire after it was founded and expanded by former Motion Twin staff as the mothership pressed on with other projects while maintaining creative oversight. Will Windblown follow in its update-heavy footsteps? I asked Thomas Vasseur and Yannick Berthier of the worker-owned studio of eight (for comparison, Evil Empire boasts of 70 employees and three projects on its website) if they want Windblown to have a long tail of support like Dead Cells.
